Learn About The International Boxing Federation

The International Boxing Federation is one of the world’s four major organizations to sanction world championship matches; the others are the World Boxing Association, the World Boxing Council and the World Boxing Organization. Formed in 1983 by Bob Lee, former president of the now defunct United States Boxing Association, which was formed in 1976 to bring United States boxing commissioners together, the IBF, based in New Jersey, quickly became one of the leaders among the IBHOF-sanctioned organizations when it recognized such established champions from other organizations as Larry Holmes, “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler, Aaron Pryor and Donald Curry.

Today, the IBF sanctions male and female boxing matches in almost every country that has professional boxing except for Japan. It has titles in every male and female class from heavyweight to mini-flyweight. In 1999, Hiawatha Knight became the first woman to serve as president of a professional boxing governing body. It began to recognize female boxers in 2010.
